Starting A New Garden!

The Start of a New Garden!

What do you do when a dear friend offers you a HUGE, abandoned, gardening space?

Me, I jumped at the chance to create something new!

I am now working on the first 3,000 square feet of the gardening area. Step one was to remove the old electrical fencing wire – over 1,000 feet of it. Step two was to rake out years and years of old, dried, plant material and wheelbarrow it to the other end of the garden. Step three was to find someone to grade and till the land. I had to admit to myself that this was one project I couldn’t do. The land was graded and tilled in less than a day.

So, I moved right into Step four. With the help of some very good friends, Allison and Roger of Two Pond Farm, I was able to get the fencing materials I needed loaded onto their trailer and delivered to the garden.

Next on the list is getting the metal t-posts installed between the existing wooden posts that are still standing and installing the wooden posts for the gates. Then we will put up the 6 ft tall, 14-gauge galvanized fencing, cover that in 8 ft tall deer fencing, and then add the groundhog apron around the perimeter. I am determined to keep that garden safe from all of the predators that live in the woods that literally surround my garden.

I am so fortunate that the weather this winter has been so mild. I feel like I’ve gotten a jump start on the season…but there is so much left to do! Honestly, it could take a year just to get the soil ready for planting! But I will take it one project at a time and plow my way through. I’m so excited about all of the things I will be learning and creating on this journey.

I’ll keep you posted as I continue…Growing With Food.
